24/7 Managed Detection and Response (MDR)

Managed detection and response (MDR) means someone is watching your practice's computers and servers around the clock, and acting the moment something looks wrong. Ransomware rarely starts at 2 PM on a Tuesday. It starts at night, on weekends and on holidays, when nobody is looking.

Cytek MDR is part of the Safeguard™ platform, backed by our analysts 24/7.

01

What MDR does

Antivirus looks for known bad files. MDR looks at behavior: a program encrypting files, a new admin account at midnight, a tool attackers use to move between computers.

  • Watches every protected workstation and server, 24/7/365.
  • Investigates alerts so you are not buried in false alarms.
  • Responds by isolating an infected device or stopping a malicious process before it spreads.
  • Reports back in plain language: what happened, what we did and what to do next.

02

Why practices need it

Healthcare is one of the most targeted industries for ransomware. A practice that goes down loses scheduling, imaging, charting and billing all at once, and a breach can mean notifying patients and reporting to HHS.

Small practices are not too small to be hit. Attackers use automated tools that find any exposed system, and smaller offices are often the easiest way in. See our healthcare cybersecurity statistics for the numbers.

HIPAA

The HIPAA rules it helps you meet

  • Security incident procedures (45 CFR 164.308(a)(6)): identify and respond to suspected incidents, reduce harmful effects and document them.
  • Protection from malicious software (164.308(a)(5)(ii)(B)).

Incidents we handle are documented in Safeguard, so the record is there if an auditor or insurer asks.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MDR and antivirus?

Antivirus blocks known malware. MDR adds 24/7 people and tools that watch for suspicious behavior, investigate it and respond, including attacks that do not use known malware.

What happens if MDR finds a threat at night?

Our analysts investigate and contain it, for example by isolating the affected computer from the network. Then we contact you with what happened and the next steps.

Is MDR required by HIPAA?

HIPAA does not name MDR, but it does require you to identify and respond to security incidents and protect against malicious software. MDR is one of the most practical ways for a small practice to do that around the clock.

Do we need MDR if our IT company manages our computers?

Usually, yes. Most IT providers keep systems running during business hours. MDR is dedicated security monitoring and response around the clock, and it works alongside your IT provider.
